Anne's Randomness

My blog is a blog

Yes, that's a silly title for a post, but that's what my company's computers have recently figured out. We're not supposed to read blogs at work, which makes plenty of sense to me, but I have certain amounts of downtime during my day and my boss doesn't mind if I read news sites and such while I'm waiting for my next piece of work.

I used to be able to drop in on my blog, just to see if anyone had commented, but now I get the scary white "This website has been blocked" screen. So, sadly, no more of that. And for anyone who's wondering, no, I did not go to work today. As I mentioned elsewhere, -7 and icy roads equal very low chances of car starting and safe driving.

By the usual run of things, this ought to be a Trycanta Tuesday, but I'm between stories right now when it comes to Trycanta. I have bits and pieces of Snowball bouncing around my head, but nothing in shape to be written down, and Dangerous Truths is still settling into new conditions. So the world of Trycanta is resting for the moment.

Really, most of my writing is resting for the moment. I do have some fanfic on the boil (yes, including Surpassing Danger, you can all calm down, the chapter is more than halfway done and I'm working on it), and something else may be coming back up... but that's not today's topic. So you're just going to have to wait. Insert evil laugh here.

My left arm is also less than happy with me. I suspect this is a consequence of having two large, active dogs who need to be leashed every time they go outside, since we do not have a fenced yard and we do have quite a large population of deer, turkeys, rabbits, groundhogs, and other things that Buddy and Brando would like to chase.

So, there not being much else going on, I shall sign off for the moment. I am hoping, but not certain, that I will be able to update Surpassing Danger within the next couple of days, and that I will have good news for you on other writing fronts the day after tomorrow. Until then, thanks as always for reading, and stay warm! Or cool.

regarding your blog and comments problem, have you considered RSS readers? it may not solve the problem of wanting to reply to comments, but you would have the ability to read any new ones. i'm currently using Feedly for my RSS needs, including news feeds as well as this blog. i just let them stack up over there and read them when i can~ ^_^ it might be a little annoying to have to subscribe to each comment feed individually, but it's an option :) maybe you can use it to circumvent the "This website has been blocked" screen?

Thanks for the thought!

Ah, silly corporate proxy servers. They’re only effective if all installed software is also regulated by the company (otherwise you could just run Tor to bypass the filter). Even then, I’ve never known them to stop me from accessing any websites I really want to. Even with the most restrictive of networks (very restricted web access and read-only hard drives), Lynx could still get me any website I wanted. Sans pictures. (Who needs ad blockers? Lynx couldn’t display them even if I wanted it to!) My current employer takes a far different approach. All they said when they handed me a laptop was “Don’t use it for porn” and let me loose. Anything more restrictive would certainly be a net reduction of productivity. After all, I often have a problem whose answer exists in an obscure blog post. Sorry. Corporate computer-usage policy is kind of one of my sore spots. As for the writing going slow right now, don’t worry about it. Just let the ideas develop at their own rate. As long as you’re writing, I don’t think it really matters what it is. If the dogs don’t eat it, that is.

I have great envy. We're totally blocked in -- no downloading or installing software without special permission and we are to assume that every keystroke is monitored. (In which case I sure hope they like what I'm up to a lot of the day, but when there's no work currently pending, do they just want me to sit there?)
